United Airlines completes Starlink installations on 300-plus regional jets and now pushes satellite broadband across its mainline fleet — free for all MileagePlus members, targeting full fleet coverage by the end of 2027.

United Airlines finished equipping its regional fleet of more than 300 aircraft with Starlink WiFi and now targets its mainline jets, offering free gate-to-gate satellite connectivity to all MileagePlus members.

The Chicago-based carrier began installing Starlink on its Boeing 737s last fall. The airline expects half of its narrowbody fleet to carry the system by year’s end, with twin-aisle widebody aircraft to follow by the close of 2027.

“We know that connectivity matters, and it’s important to our customers. It’s really taken partnership with Starlink, to be able to deliver the experience that we’ve always hoped for in the space of WiFi,” said David Kinzelman, United’s chief customer officer.

United showcased the technology during its two-day “Elevated” event at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), operating a demonstration flight aboard a 737-900ER. Flight UA3776 departed LAX at approximately 4 p.m., traveling north along the California coast as far as the Bay Area before turning back.

The carrier debuted mainline Starlink service last October, when flight UA2940 — a 737-800 operating from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) — became the first mainline commercial flight with the technology aboard. United chose the flight number deliberately: it represents the total number of antennas the airline plans to install across its fleet.

Each aircraft receives two Starlink antennas. Narrowbody jets carry two onboard routers; widebody aircraft will be outfitted with four.

Seventeen mainline aircraft have been equipped since the October debut, and Kinzelman said the airline is “making really good progress.” The Airbus A321neo fleet comes next, followed by widebodies.

“The next one coming is the 321, and then we’re gonna start the widebodies which is gonna be super exciting,” he said. “So by the end of the year, we will have half of our narrowbody fleet, the entire regional fleet, and then by the end of next year we’ll have the entire United fleet equipped.”

WiFi activates the moment passengers board and remains live throughout the flight. Access requires MileagePlus membership, though enrollment carries no cost.

“We have about 25% of our daily departures are Starlink equipped already, which is great to see,” Kinzelman said.

Starlink, developed by SpaceX, delivers speeds comparable to — and in some cases exceeding — ground-based internet service. Passengers use the connection to stream video, participate in live gaming, share and edit documents, and collaborate with colleagues in real time.

United reported that passenger satisfaction scores for inflight WiFi on Starlink-equipped aircraft have nearly doubled. Travelers specifically credited continuous coverage, reliable service, and onboard streaming as the primary drivers.

“Starlink is free and fast,” Kinzelman said. “But it’s about what it enables. It enables personalization. It enables customized experiences for customers that travel on United, which is what we’re really thrilled about.”

United’s fleet of more than 1,080 aircraft carries an average age of 17.2 years, according to ch-aviation. The carrier has been retiring older aircraft types — including the 767-300ER, 757-200, A320, and A319 — and has not specified whether those models will receive Starlink before their retirement.
