Budapest and Prague join American’s global network for the first time as the carrier inaugurates four new nonstop European routes — and kicks off its record-breaking centennial summer.

American Airlines on Thursday launched four new nonstop routes to Europe, opening service to Budapest, Prague, Athens and Zurich on the first day of what the carrier has called its largest summer schedule in its 100-year history.

The four inaugural departures — from Philadelphia to Budapest and Prague, and from Dallas-Fort Worth to Athens and Zurich — push American’s trans-Atlantic network to up to 70 daily flights from the United States, the airline said.

Philadelphia’s Trans-Atlantic Reach Expands

The Philadelphia routes carry particular significance for U.S. travelers: American is now the only U.S. carrier operating nonstop service between the United States and Budapest, Hungary. Both routes — Philadelphia (PHL) to Budapest (BUD) and Philadelphia to Prague (PRG) — operate daily on the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner. The Prague service runs through Oct. 5. Budapest and Prague are brand-new destinations in American’s global network.

American’s Philadelphia hub now offers nonstop service to more than 120 destinations worldwide, including 19 across the Atlantic.

The summer launches follow a redesign of the carrier’s PHL schedule, which expanded coordinated departure “banks” — synchronized waves of arrivals and departures — from six to seven. The change has already produced improvements in on-time performance, passenger connections, and systemwide baggage handling, the airline said.

“Bolstered by our redesigned schedule and powered by the dedication of our team, we’re ready to care for customers during a record summer at PHL — especially as the city hosts several major global events this year,” said Cesar Marchese, American’s vice president of PHL operations. “We’re proud to serve as a key gateway and connection point to Europe, now with two new iconic destinations that strengthen our robust international network.”

Dallas Hub Reaches Greece and Switzerland

In Texas, new service from Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) to Athens (ATH) operates on the Boeing 777-300ER, while Zurich (ZRH) service uses the Boeing 777-200ER. The Zurich route runs through Aug. 4.

The Athens route marks the first time American has flown nonstop from Dallas to Greece. The Zurich route is a resumption after a 19-year absence — the airline last served DFW-Zurich in 2007.

Brian Znotins, American’s senior vice president of network and schedule planning, told CNBC that the airline “consistently sees a strong flow of passengers connecting in Europe to reach destinations such as Rome and Athens,” driving the decision to open the Greek capital from its Texas hub.

Athens and Zurich bring DFW’s nonstop network to more than 230 destinations. The hub operates more than 930 peak daily departures.

“New service to Athens and Zurich is a great example of how American continues to invest in its largest hub with even more opportunities to connect to destinations around the world,” said Jim Moses, American’s senior vice president of DFW operations. “We’re also investing in the travel journey with our new 13-bank schedule that sets up our team for success and delivers for our customers — not just at DFW but across our entire airline due to the outsized impact DFW has on our global operation.”

DFW’s new 13-bank schedule, implemented earlier this year, has in its first two months cut delays, reduced gate changes, improved connections, and lifted baggage performance, the airline said. American recorded the best block performance among major U.S. carriers in April 2026.

Centennial Summer by the Numbers

Thursday’s launches open American’s centennial summer, running May 21 through Sept. 8. The carrier expects to carry 75 million customers across 750,000 flights — with nearly 500 customers taking off every minute at peak. July 17 is projected as the busiest single day, with 6,995 scheduled departures. Memorial Day weekend alone is expected to see more than 4.2 million passengers across more than 40,000 flights.

Beyond the four routes inaugurated Thursday, American has recently added nonstop service from Miami to Milan Malpensa and from New York’s Kennedy Airport to Edinburgh, Scotland. The carrier also launched direct service from Philadelphia to Santiago, Dominican Republic.

What Travelers Will Find Onboard and at the Gate

American has introduced several customer-experience upgrades tied to the summer expansion. TSA PreCheck Touchless ID is now available at 60 airports, including all of American’s hubs, offering faster, touchless identity verification at security checkpoints. The airline’s redesigned app provides real-time rebooking, bag tracking, and digital vouchers, with live updates through expanded digital wallet integration.

Travelers connecting to Europe through Philadelphia can use the Flagship and Admirals Club lounges at the A-West concourse. At Dallas-Fort Worth, lounges are available across all five terminals, including a Flagship lounge in Terminal D. AAdvantage members on nearly every domestic American flight have access to free Wi-Fi, sponsored by AT&T.
