America’s largest carrier continues to strengthen its position in Mexico with new service to Puerto Escondido, offering more flights, seats, and destinations in the country than any other US-based airline.
American Airlines announced it will add Puerto Escondido as its 30th destination in Mexico, further cementing its position as the leading US carrier serving the popular vacation country. The new service will begin December 3, operating twice weekly between Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and Puerto Escondido International Airport in Oaxaca state.
“Puerto Escondido is quickly becoming a top destination for travelers in search of tropical and relaxing getaways, and we are confident that our new service from Dallas-Fort Worth will offer our customers the opportunity to experience a unique part of Mexico,” said JosΓ© Freig, Vice President of International Operations at American Airlines.
The year-round route will operate on Wednesdays and Sundays using Embraer E175 aircraft flown by American Eagle, the airline’s regional brand. Puerto Escondido, located less than 3.1 miles from Pacific Ocean beaches, has emerged as a sought-after destination for travelers seeking coastal escapes.
According to data from aviation analytics company Cirium’s Diio Mi airline planning tool, American Airlines has scheduled 780 weekly flights from the US to Mexico in December, including the new Puerto Escondido service. This extensive network significantly outpaces other US carriers serving Mexico.
Cancun International Airport remains American’s most popular Mexican destination with 207 weekly flights, followed by Mexico City International Airport (Benito JuΓ‘rez) with 91 weekly flights. Dallas/Fort Worth serves as the airline’s primary gateway to Mexico, accounting for 400 weekly departures across the border.
Other major American Airlines hubs with substantial Mexico service include Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport with 121 weekly departures and Miami International Airport with 77 weekly departures.
The airline has steadily expanded its Mexican network throughout 2024, adding service to Tijuana International Airport, the new Tulum International Airport, and Veracruz International Airport. In March, American also launched flights to Tampico International Airport.
Additionally, American will inaugurate Oklahoma City’s first-ever international flights with Saturday-only service to Cancun beginning November 8. These flights will utilize Boeing 737-800 aircraft.
The carrier’s Mexico-bound network is projected to grow by 9.9% in weekly flights compared to December 2024, resulting in 11.7% additional seats to the country. This growth excludes the newly announced Puerto Escondido service.
While Mexico represents a strategic international market for American Airlines, with the country being the most popular international destination for US travelers, domestic routes remain the airline’s primary revenue generator. According to its 2024 annual report, American generated $35.3 billion from domestic operations, while Latin American routes, including Mexico, produced $6.5 billion, down slightly from $6.7 billion in 2023.
The airline’s total passenger revenue reached $49.5 billion in 2024, with transatlantic routes contributing $6.4 billion and transpacific routes adding $1.2 billion.
