Three weekly Boeing 787-9 flights are set to link Frankfurt with Nagoya, one of Japan’s major industrial centers, from March 29, 2027, as Lufthansa Group plans up to 50 weekly Japan flights next summer.

Lufthansa plans to resume seasonal flights between Frankfurt and Nagoya on March 29, 2027, with three weekly departures as part of a broader expansion of its Japan flights, Lufthansa Group announced Tuesday.

The German carrier will fly from Frankfurt on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, according to Lufthansa Group’s schedule announcement. The group said the flights were available for booking as of Tuesday.

The return would restore a direct link between Lufthansa’s Frankfurt hub and Nagoya, which the company describes as one of Japan’s most important industrial and economic centers. Lufthansa said Aichi prefecture, which includes Nagoya, is a major base for Japan’s automotive and manufacturing industries.

Lufthansa Group attributed the expansion to increased demand for travel to Japan. The announcement did not include booking figures, load factors, a growth rate or a comparison period, and the size of that increase has not been independently confirmed.

“Japan is a key market for the Lufthansa Group, and we are pleased to further strengthen our presence with additional capacity and the resumption of flights to Nagoya,” said Dieter Vranckx, member of the executive board and chief commercial officer of Lufthansa Group.

Schedule and aircraft

Flight LH736 is scheduled to leave Frankfurt at 2:10 p.m. and arrive in Nagoya at 9:35 a.m. the next day. The return, LH737, is scheduled to depart Nagoya at 11:30 a.m. and land in Frankfurt at 6:30 p.m. All times are local.

The announcement lists Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays as the route’s days of operation and gives a start date for the outbound flight only. It does not separately give the weekdays or the first date for the return flight from Nagoya.

Lufthansa plans to operate the route with Boeing 787-9 aircraft fitted with its Allegris cabins. The aircraft will have 28 business-class seats, 28 premium economy seats and 231 economy seats.

Tokyo Narita service added

The Nagoya flights are part of a wider summer 2027 plan. Lufthansa also plans a daily seasonal service between Frankfurt and Tokyo’s Narita airport starting March 28, 2027, one day before the Nagoya launch.

That flight, LH710, is scheduled to leave Frankfurt at 1:45 p.m. and reach Narita at 9:30 a.m. the next day. The return, LH711, is scheduled to depart Narita at 11:20 a.m. and arrive in Frankfurt at 6:40 p.m. The same 787-9 configuration is planned for the route.

Lufthansa said its existing daily flights to Tokyo’s Haneda airport from Frankfurt and Munich will continue alongside the Narita service.

Swiss International Air Lines, the group carrier known as SWISS, plans up to seven weekly flights between Zurich and Narita in summer 2027.

Across Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, SWISS and ITA Airways, the group plans up to 50 weekly flights to Japan next summer, serving Haneda, Narita, Osaka and Nagoya.

Visitor numbers offer mixed backdrop

National tourism data do not measure airline bookings or traffic on any single route, but the most recent monthly figures show a mixed picture.

The Japan National Tourism Organization estimated 3,098,900 visitor arrivals in August, down 9.6% from August 2025, according to figures released Sept. 16. The agency reported August records in 14 source markets, including the United States, despite the overall decline.

Partnership and airport status

Lufthansa Group said partner All Nippon Airways offers additional booking options alongside the group’s own network. ANA describes its cooperation with Lufthansa on European routes as a joint venture.

Chubu Centrair International Airport, which serves Nagoya, currently lists Lufthansa German Airlines as a codeshare-only carrier on its airline information page.
