United is coming back to Moab. Nonstop Denver flights resume Oct. 7 after a nearly two-year gap — part of a bigger shake-up putting Moab’s airport on stronger federal footing.

United Airlines will resume nonstop flights between Denver and Moab on Oct. 7, ending a nearly two-year gap in service that will now be operated by regional partner SkyWest Airlines.

The flights, branded United Express, will use 50-seat Bombardier CRJ200 regional jets and mark United’s first Denver-to-Moab service since January 2024, when the route was suspended.

The restart follows a U.S. Department of Transportation decision on June 12 awarding SkyWest a four-year Essential Air Service contract to serve Canyonlands Regional Airport, effective Oct. 1, 2026, through Sept. 30, 2030. Unlike United’s previous unsubsidized service, the new arrangement is backed by a federal contract designed to guarantee stable air service for four years.

SkyWest will also begin Delta Connection flights between Moab and Salt Lake City on Oct. 1, restoring a route the airport had not had since early 2023. Together, the two new services return Moab’s air links to both United’s and Delta’s networks for the first time since Contour Airlines took over the airport’s federally subsidized service in 2024.

“To have the Delta and United brands as our primary carriers is a huge advantage,” said Steve Gleason, director of Canyonlands Regional Airport.

Under the new codeshare arrangement, passengers will be able to book Moab flights on United.com and Delta.com, earn frequent flyer miles and have checked bags routed through to their final destination — benefits the previous carrier, Contour, could not offer under its interline-only setup.

For the first month, United and SkyWest plan a mix of one and two daily round trips before shifting to a consistent daily schedule. The initial timetable includes a Denver departure at 8 a.m. arriving in Moab at 9:30 a.m. five days a week, and a second daily departure at 12:15 p.m. arriving at 1:45 p.m. Return flights from Moab are scheduled for 10:10 a.m., arriving in Denver at 11:35 a.m., five days a week, and a daily 2:20 p.m. departure arriving at 3:45 p.m. The flight takes about an hour and a half.

The airport’s enplanement numbers illustrate what’s at stake. Canyonlands Regional Airport recorded an all-time high of 20,093 passengers in 2021 while under SkyWest’s United Express codeshare service. That figure fell to 10,625 in 2024 under Contour — a 47% decline. A separate study found that between 21,000 and 44,000 passengers a year had been bypassing the Moab airport altogether and driving instead to Grand Junction, Colorado.

During the county’s carrier-selection deliberations, one official framed the goal as long-term stability. “We’re looking for a foundational partner, so we’re not restarting every three or four years. We need stability for growth,” the official said.

SkyWest’s winning bid also came in cheaper for taxpayers: the airline offered a $199.86 per-passenger subsidy, the lowest of four bidders, compared with $229.89 offered by Contour.

United first began serving Denver-Moab through SkyWest in 2018. SkyWest also flew Moab-to-Salt Lake City service until early 2023, when it exited the airport. The United-branded Denver route was suspended in January 2024, and Contour Airlines took over with Phoenix flights, later adding Denver service in April 2025 with fares starting at $79 one-way on 30-seat aircraft. SkyWest’s 50-seat jets will boost per-flight seat capacity by about two-thirds compared with Contour’s 30-seat aircraft.

It remains unclear whether Contour will continue any service from Canyonlands Regional Airport once SkyWest’s Denver and Salt Lake City flights begin. The DOT’s award designates SkyWest as the subsidized carrier for both routes, but the airline’s final status at the airport after Oct. 1 has not been specified.

The Essential Air Service program, created under the Airline Deregulation Act of 1978, subsidizes carriers serving small communities that might otherwise lose commercial air service. The program covered 177 communities nationwide at a cost of $591.7 million in 2024. The White House’s proposed fiscal 2027 budget calls for significant cuts to discretionary EAS funding, a proposal that has introduced uncertainty about the program’s future even as Moab locks in its new four-year contract.

Moab serves as the gateway to Arches and Canyonlands national parks, two of the most-visited destinations in the American Southwest; Arches drew an estimated 1.46 million visitors in 2024. Grand County, home to about 9,669 residents as of the 2020 census, relies heavily on tourism. Whether the restored air service outperforms its earlier run will depend on sustained leisure demand and the strength of United’s and Delta’s connecting networks.

SkyWest, based in St. George, Utah, is one of the largest regional airlines in North America, operating about 500 aircraft and carrying 46 million passengers across 261 destinations in 2025. The carrier flies under partnership agreements with United, Delta, American Airlines and Alaska Airlines. Canyonlands Regional Airport, located about 21 miles northwest of Moab, has no control tower; approach and departure control is handled by the Denver Air Route Traffic Control Center.
