A Silk Way West 747 freighter bound for Houston nearly ran out of fuel over North Texas, forcing controllers to declare an emergency and divert the jumbo jet to Dallas/Fort Worth with 30 minutes of fuel left.

A Silk Way West Airlines Boeing 747-8F bound for Houston landed safely at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport on Tuesday after air traffic controllers declared an emergency for a crew running critically low on fuel.

The freighter, Flight 7L5722, had strayed more than 200 miles off course. By the time it reached the Dallas terminal area, the pilots reported roughly 6,000 pounds of fuel remaining, described on the radio as about 30 minutes of endurance — yet they were still asking for clearance to continue to Houston.

Controllers determined the heavy freighter could not physically cover the remaining distance. They declared a formal emergency on the crew’s behalf and vectored the aircraft to DFW, where it touched down at 10:51 a.m. and was met by emergency vehicles.

A 200-Mile Gap Between Where The Crew Was And Where It Thought It Was

The aircraft, registered VQ-BVB, departed Mexico City’s Felipe Ángeles International Airport at 7:29 a.m. local time, or 8:29 a.m. in Texas. About 50 minutes after takeoff, near the Matamoros VOR at the U.S.-Mexico border, it diverged from the standard eastbound track to Houston and instead turned north toward San Antonio and Dallas.

Flight tracking records captured the confusion. FlightAware displayed three separate entries for the same 7:29 a.m. departure: a Mexico City–Houston leg marked as diverted, a Mexico City–Dallas Love Field leg also marked as diverted, and the completed flight into DFW. Flightradar24 likewise showed Love Field as the destination before recording the final diversion.

Over the Dallas area, the 747-8F descended to 5,000 feet — an altitude consistent with an aircraft setting up to land at Love Field. About 15 minutes before landing, the crew transmitted “Pan-Pan,” the international urgency signal, and reported the 6,000-pound fuel state.

Then, in the same exchange, the pilots asked for priority vectors to Runway 26R at Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport.

“Okay sir, you are not even near Houston right now sir, if you want to get to Houston, how much fuel do you have sir, because you are several hundred miles out?” the Dallas-area controller replied, according to air traffic control audio.

A pilot on the flight said the aircraft was “running out of fuel,” and later told the controller, “we want to go to Houston now, but the shortcut please.”

What The ACARS Logs Show

Messages sent over the Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System, captured by hobbyist monitoring feeds and reported by aviation site One Mile at a Time, offer a parallel account of the crew’s thinking. Silk Way West has not confirmed them. The airline’s operations team messaged the flight deck to ask, “are you heading to KDAL?”

The pilots answered that they had been sent the long way around: “due to high traffic in IAH ATC reroute us on longer route destination is IAH for the moment.”

Discussion on aviation forums and among flight-tracking enthusiasts has centered on a possible data-entry error in the aircraft’s flight management system, with the four-letter code for Dallas Love Field, KDAL, entered instead of or ahead of Houston’s KIAH. The tracking data showing a descent to 5,000 feet directly toward Love Field is consistent with that theory. The ACARS traffic points the other way, suggesting the crew believed controllers had deliberately routed them on a 200-mile detour.

Either way, the gap between the aircraft’s actual position over North Texas and the crew’s request for a visual shortcut to a specific Houston runway points to a serious loss of situational awareness on the flight deck.

Why 6,000 Pounds Is So Little

The U.S. benchmark for international flag operations, 14 CFR 121.645, requires turbine-powered airplanes to carry enough fuel to reach the destination, plus 10% of total flight time, plus fuel to reach the most distant alternate airport, plus 30 minutes of holding fuel at 1,500 feet above that alternate. That rule binds U.S. carriers; foreign operators such as Silk Way West fly into the United States under Part 129 and plan fuel to their home regulator’s standards, which follow broadly comparable international minimums.

The arithmetic explains the controller’s urgency. A 747-8 burns somewhere around 400 pounds of fuel a minute at cruising altitude, according to aviation site One Mile at a Time, and considerably more when climbing. That puts 6,000 pounds at roughly 15 minutes of fuel at cruise power, somewhat longer in a low-thrust descent. One Mile at a Time has noted the pilots may have meant 6,000 kilograms — about 13,200 pounds — which would put their fuel closer to 30 minutes at cruise burn rate and align with the figure heard on the radio. It leaves virtually no margin for a weather hold, a go-around, a runway closure or another diversion.

Federal Aviation Administration guidance gives controllers wide latitude in exactly this situation. The agency’s Aeronautical Information Manual states that an aircraft “is in at least an urgency condition the moment the pilot becomes doubtful about position, fuel endurance, weather, or any other condition that could adversely affect flight safety.” Under FAA Order JO 7110.65, Chapter 10, controllers may treat a flight as an emergency whenever they believe an emergency or urgent condition exists, even without a “Mayday” call — the authority the Dallas controller used to override the crew’s request.

“Pan-Pan” sits one tier below a Mayday. The FAA’s Pilot/Controller Glossary defines distress — the Mayday call — as being threatened by serious or imminent danger and requiring immediate assistance, and urgency as being concerned about safety and requiring timely but not immediate assistance. Entering a busy urban terminal area with 6,000 pounds of fuel blurs that distinction considerably.

Controllers sent the jet to DFW rather than Love Field for a specific reason: DFW’s Runway 18R/36L measures 13,400 feet, or 4,084 meters, which Simple Flying said makes it significantly better equipped than Love Field for an emergency arrival by a large, four-engine freighter. The flight landed on Runway 18R.

Total block time was 2 hours and 21 minutes. Sources differ on how long the trip normally takes: One Mile at a Time puts it at around 90 minutes, while View from the Wing cites 1 hour and 44 minutes, based on the same flight exactly one week earlier. Both figures make Tuesday’s routing a severe deviation.

Silk Way West Airlines has not publicly commented on the incident and has offered no explanation for the route deviation, the ACARS exchange or the fuel planning behind the flight, as of Wednesday. After refueling, the aircraft flew the remaining 39 minutes to Houston on Tuesday afternoon, completing its original run.

The Airline And The Airplane

Silk Way West Airlines is an international cargo carrier headquartered in Baku, Azerbaijan, with a freighter fleet of just over a dozen aircraft. It does not typically operate scheduled service into Dallas Love Field, a smaller airport dominated by domestic passenger traffic — which deepens the puzzle over why the jet was pointed there.

The 747-8F is the final and most advanced freighter version of the 747 family. It carries a maximum structural payload of about 303,700 pounds, or 137.8 metric tons, a maximum takeoff weight of 987,000 pounds, and a usable fuel capacity of roughly 63,000 gallons, giving it intercontinental range beyond 4,000 nautical miles at full payload. Its hinged nose door allows front loading of oversized industrial machinery. Each GEnx-2B67 produces 66,500 pounds of thrust and, according to GE Aerospace, burns about 15% less fuel than the engines it replaced.

“The GEnx-2B engines serve a critical role in the efficiency gains offered by the 747-8 family. It will help the 747-8 provide our customers with improved fuel efficiency, reductions in emissions and noise, while allowing customers to generate additional revenue with their ability to carry more passengers and cargo,” said Ross R. Bogue, then Boeing’s vice president and general manager of the 747 program and Everett site, in comments issued after GEnx-2B testing reached 70,000 pounds of thrust.

The 747-8F entered commercial service in October 2011 with launch customer Cargolux. Boeing delivered the last 747 in January 2023, ending the type’s production run.

Because the airplane was built with tanks sized for ultra-long-haul work, a low-fuel emergency on a short regional hop from Mexico City is highly unusual. Simple Flying has cautioned that the tracking data does not establish whether dispatch, air traffic control, the filed flight plan or the aircraft’s flight management system was the source of the error, and that the full controller record will be needed before responsibility can be assigned.
